As we’ve been saying throughout our current series, our generosity needs to be built upon the great truth of God’s generosity to us. To further solidify that foundation, here are examples of God’s amazing generosity displayed in each book of the Bible. From “let there be light” (Gen 1:3) to “surely I am coming soon” (Rev 22:20) God’s Word consistently shows us that He is a giving God!
1-2 | God gives life.
“then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” Genesis 2:7
14-15 | God gives salvation to captives.
“Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying, ‘I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.'” Exodus 15:1-2
23 | God gives insight to the future and regular reasons to feast.
“The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, These are the appointed feasts of the Lord that you shall proclaim as holy convocations; they are my appointed feasts.'” Leviticus 23:1-2
Numbers 22-24 | God gives blessings when the world is calling down curses.
“And Balak said to Balaam, ‘What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have done nothing but bless them.’ And he answered and said, ‘Must I not take care to speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?'” Numbers 23:11-12
Deuteronomy 5 | God gives His laws to protect His people from themselves.
“You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.” Deuteronomy 5:33
Joshua 1 | God gives His people the promised land.
“Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.” Joshua 1:3
Judges 13-16 | God gives strength.
“Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon Samson” Judges 14:6
Ruth 2 | God generously provides protection to the foreigner and the widow.
“The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!” Ruth 2:12
1 Samuel 17 | God gives victory over fear.
“Then David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.'” 1 Samuel 17:45
2 Samuel 9 | God gives honor to the broken.
“So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table, like one of the king’s sons.” 2 Samuel 9:11
1 Kings 18 | God gives proof of His presence.
“Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, ‘The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.’” 1 Kings 18:38-39
2 Kings 6 | God gives vision to the spiritually blind.
“Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.’ So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:17
1 Chronicles 29 | God gives provisions for His work.
“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.” 1 Chronicles 29:14
2 Chronicles 1 | God gives wisdom, knowledge, riches, possessions, and honor.
God answered Solomon, “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may govern my people over whom I have made you king, wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. I will also give you riches, possessions, and honor, such as none of the kings had who were before you, and none after you shall have the like.” 2 Chronicles 1:11-12
Ezra 7 | God gives favor with influential people.
“For on the first day of the first month Ezra began to go up from Babylonia, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, for the good hand of his God was on him.” Ezra 7:9
Nehemiah 4 | God appoints people to stand in the gap.
“So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed the people by their clans, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, ‘Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.’” Nehemiah 4:13-14
Esther 2 | God gives influence to the powerless.
“And when Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus, into his royal palace, in the tenth month, which is the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign, the king loved Esther more than all the women, and she won grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins, so that he set the royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.” Esther 2:16-17
Job 42 | God gives restoration to the devastated.
“And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.” Job 42:10
Psalm 130 | God gives redemption to those enslaved to sin.
“O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.” Psalm 130:7-8
Proverbs 3 | God gives favor to the humble.
“Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor.” Proverbs 3:34
Ecclesiastes 3 | God puts eternity in our hearts.
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11
Song of Solomon 1 | God gives human love that is better than wine.
“Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine” Song of Solomon 1:2
Isaiah 40 | God gives power to the faint.
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.” Isaiah 40:29
Jeremiah 11 | God gives warning after warning after warning.
“For I solemnly warned your fathers when I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, warning them persistently, even to this day, saying, ‘Obey my voice.'” Jeremiah 11:7
Lamentations 3 | God gives companionship during suffering.
“For the Lord will not cast off forever, but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; for he does not afflict from his heart or grieve the children of men.” lamentations 3:31-33
Ezekiel 37 | God gives life to dead bones.
“Thus says the Lord God to these bones: ‘Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’” Ezekiel 37:5-6
Daniel 6 | God rescues the perishing and brings them into a kingdom that never fails.
“He is the living God, enduring forever; his kingdom shall never be destroyed, and his dominion shall be to the end. He delivers and rescues; he works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth, he who has saved Daniel from the power of the lions.” Daniel 6:26-27
Hosea 1-3 | God redeems His lovers who have prostituted themselves with other gods.
“And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20 I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord.” Hosea 2:19-20
Joel 2 | God gives us back the years that were stolen by catastrophes.
“I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten” Joel 2:25
Amos 5 | God gives justice.
“But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Amos 5:24
Obadiah | God gives judgements that are fair.
“For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head.” Obadiah 1:15
Jonah 3 | God gives opportunities to repent.
“When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.” Jonah 3:10
Micah 7 | God gives pardon for iniquities.
“Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression” Micah 7:18
Nahum 1 | God gives a hiding place in tough times.
“The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble.” Nahum 1:7
Habakkuk 3 | God gives joy and peace beyond understanding.
“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s; he makes me tread on my high places.” Habakkuk 3:17-19
Zephaniah 3 | God gives His presence and sings songs over His people.
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
Haggai 1 | God stirs people to accomplish His good purposes.
“And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God.” Haggai 1:14
Zechariah 2 | God gives protection.
“And I will be a wall of fire all around, declares the Lord, and I will be the glory in her midst.” Zechariah 2:5
Malachi 3 | God gives us stability by never changing.
“For I the Lord, do not change” Malachi 3:6
Matthew 8 | God gives Jesus.
“‘She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us).” Matthew 1:21-23
Mark 6 | God gives food to the hungry.
“And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied.” Mark 6:41-42
Luke 5 | God gives His touch to the untouchables.
“While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, ‘Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.’ And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, ‘I will; be clean.’ And immediately the leprosy left him.” Luke 5:12-13
John 14 | God doesn’t leave us as orphans but gives us His Holy Spirit.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:16-18
Acts 4 | God gives us community for encouragement and strength.
“Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.” Acts 4:32
Romans 5 | God gives grace when we deserve death.
“For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:17
1 Corinthians 12 | God gives us spiritual gifts.
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-6
2 Corinthians 5 | God gives us a new life and new identity in Christ.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
Galatians 5 | God gives freedom.
“It was freedom that Christ has set us free, stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1
Ephesians 2 | God gives us unity through the cross.
“And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” Ephesians 2:17-19
Philippians 4 | God gives us peace that goes beyond what we can understand.
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7
Colossians 1 | God gives us the power to live for Him.
“For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.” Colossians 1:29
1 Thessalonians 2 | God gives us His Word which works in us.
“And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13
2 Thessalonians 2 | God gives us eternal encouragement and good hope.
“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace” 2 Thessalonians 2:16
1 Timothy 6 | God gives us everything to enjoy.
“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.” 1 Timothy 6:17
2 Timothy 4 | God gives nearness during trials.
“At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me” 2 Timothy 4:16-17
Titus 3 | God gives His Spirit to regenerate and renew us.
“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” Titus 3:4-5
Philemon | God provides us with the church to refresh our hearts.
“For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.” Philemon 1:7
Hebrews 4 | God gives us access to His throne of grace through Jesus.
“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
James 1 | God gives every good and perfect gift.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” James 1:17
1 Peter 1 | God gives us inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you” 1 Peter 1:3-4
2 Peter 1 | God has given us everything we need to live a godly life.
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence” 2 Peter 1:3
1 John 3 | God gives us His love.
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” 1 John 3:1
2 John | God gives rewards for following Him.
“Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.” 2 John 1:8
3 John | God gives us the joy of seeing faith growing in other people.
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” 3 John 1:4
Jude | God gives His people a spotless record.
“Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy” Jude 1:24
Revelation 21 | God gives a new heaven and new earth where there is no more suffering.
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’” Revelation 21:1-4
